Is This A Tip Or A Sign? Mark Zuckerberg Plunges World Into A Frenzy As He Names His Goat Bitcoin

In a recent Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg shared a post to his Facebook profile of his two pet goats, Bitcoin and Max.

Most people’s pet names wouldn’t be noteworthy, but Zuckerberg’s goats, belonging to one of the world’s richest and most powerful men, sent social media into a frenzy.

Many observers thought the names were meant to go together, with ‘Max’ being short for ‘Maximalist’, suggesting that Zuckerberg believes people should go all in on Bitcoin.

However, the Facebook CEO hasn’t made any sort of public pronouncement about whether he owns any of the digital currency.

My goats: Max and Bitcoin.

Zuckerberg and Facebook have been interested in cryptocurrencies for a number of years, after proposing Facebook’s own currency, Libra.

But in the years since Libra was first announced, it lost key backers and faced opposition from regulators, leading to Facebook watering down its proposals – meanwhile, the inspiration for it, Bitcoin, has rocketed in price.

Zuckerberg has also been known to personally experiment with apps and products before he decides to either buy or copy them – internet sleuths have found accounts for new audio social media app Clubhouse belonging to Zuckerberg, who has rumoured to be adapting some of the app’s audio features for Facebook in the coming months.

This prior interest in the cryptocurrency world coupled with Zuckerberg’s vast personal fortune has led many to speculate whether the Facebook owner has a large investment in Bitcoin, or a related cryptocurrency.

Such an investment would seem to be at odds with the fact that Facebook plans to launch Libra’s successor, Diem, later this year.

Observers with long memories were also reminded of the time Zuckerberg reportedly killed a goat and fed it to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

Dorsey, in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2019, said: ‘I go, ‘We’re eating the goat you killed?’ [Zuckerberg] said, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘Have you eaten goat before?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, I love it.’ I’m like, ‘What else are we having?’ ‘Salad.’ ‘I said, ‘Where is the goat?’ ‘It’s in the oven.’ Then we waited for about 30 minutes. He’s like, ‘I think it’s done now.’ We go in the dining room. He puts the goat down. It was cold. That was memorable.”

At the time, in 2011, Zuckerberg reportedly made it a ‘personal challenge’ to only eat what he killed in a bid for greater sustainability.

It is not clear whether his goats ‘Max’ and ‘Bitcoin’ are currently destined for the dinner table or are longer term parts of his life.

Bitcoin and similar cryptocurrencies, like joke Dogecoin, have seen a vast increase in value since the start of the pandemic, with many internet investors being made overnight millionaires thanks to volatile prices.
