#CancelNetflix effort swells after debut of controversial film 'Cuties'

The social hashtag "#CancelNetflix" has been gaining steam and has reached Twitter's top trending topics as the streaming giant faces heavy flak for its controversial film Cuties, which made its debut on the service on September 9.

The French film (original title Mignonnes) was a Sundance favorite in 2019, but has drawn heavy criticism from those saying it sexualizes young girls.

The movie is about a Senegalese girl in Paris joining a dance clique to escape family troubles.

Netflix had apologized last month for a promotional poster featuring its young cast dressed and posed provocatively.

Shares in Netflix fell 3.9% yesterday, though with a trajectory that generally mirrored the broader NASDAQ market:

The shares have fallen 9.5% over five days.

A Netflix spokesperson reacted by saying; "Cuties is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children. It's an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up - and we'd encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie."
